Laos’ southern province strives to boost agricultural production

VIENTIANE, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) — A new irrigation system, jointly funded by Laos and Vietnam, has been installed in the southern Lao Khammuan province to improve crop yields.
The project was designed to irrigate 500 hectares of farmland, benefiting 777 families in four villages of Nongbok district in Khammuan province, some 250 km southeast of the capital Vientiane, according to the Lao Economic Daily on Wednesday.
The project included five water pumps, a 500-meter-long embankment along the river, a 1.7-km-long pipeline and irrigation canals.
Governor of Khammuan province Vanxay Phongsavanh has called for managing the system effectively to maximize its benefits.
The system will be used for dry-season farming in early 2025. ■
